This Week In Fort McMurray:

• There will be a Council meeting on Tuesday at 6:00 pm. Council will receive a presentation regarding the Vehicle for Hire Annual Report. They will also discuss committing $500,000 from reserve funds to support the 2027 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games, contingent upon the Municipality being awarded the bid. Mayor Bowman will bring forward a motion to engage with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 165 to develop proposed options for the installation of a Veterans Crosswalk. Councillor Cardinal will also bring forward a motion, this one to explore opportunities to update the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s brand standards to incorporate meaningful representation of Indigenous culture.
  
  
• The Communities in Bloom Committee meeting, originally scheduled for Thursday at 6:00 pm, is cancelled.
  
  
• The Municipality is requesting feedback from residents who have recently applied for a development permit or a business license. If this is you, there is an online survey you can take to tell the Municipality about your experience.

• The Municipality has launched its annual Nominate Your Neighbour program with an exciting new twist. This year, residents can use an interactive Holiday Lights Map to nominate festive displays, plan tours, and vote for their favourites. Top-voted displays will receive gifts from Wood Buffalo Communities in Bloom. Nominations are open until December 18th and can be submitted online, with selected photos featured on social media.
  
  
• The Wood Buffalo Military Museum in Fort McMurray has announced it is expanding its exhibits to meet growing interest in local and military history. Located at the Fort McMurray Legion, the museum features a diverse collection of weapons, uniforms, documents, and armoured vehicles, including a Chieftain tank and a LAV monument. Curator Kevin Rodgers highlighted the museum's focus on both local and global military stories. Partnerships with organizations like Keyano College and the Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo have supported the museum’s growth since its soft opening in 2021. New exhibits and a digitization project aim to attract more visitors and solidify its role as a community hub for historical education.
  
  
• UCP MLA Tany Yao raised concerns about drug activity at Tawâw, a supportive housing program for Indigenous individuals in Fort McMurray, claiming these worries were shared by municipal officials. However, Mayor Sandy Bowman and Indigenous leaders refuted Yao's statements, with Bowman affirming the facility's positive impact. Jo-Anne Packham of the Wood Buffalo Wellness Society, which oversees Tawâw, emphasized strict anti-drug policies and highlighted the program’s success in reducing homelessness and police interactions. While Yao admitted he has not visited Tawâw, he insists his comments were based on feedback from constituents and some municipal sources.
