The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) claimed that changes to the provincial funding model will result in nearly $500,000 less for anti-homelessness programs. Under the previous model, the Province provided funding to the Municipality, which distributed it to local non-profits and services. The new model will direct funds straight to frontline service providers, bypassing the unicipality. As a result, RMWB expects to lose funding for 30 housing placements and various homelessness prevention programs. The Alberta government disputes these claims, stating there are no cuts to frontline services and accusing the RMWB of spreading misinformation.

It was announced that Fort McMurray will host Alberta’s largest athletics and games tournament for seniors, the Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games, in August 2027. The event is expected to bring 900 athletes, coaches, and spectators. The region last hosted the games in 2003. The Municipality has approved $500,000 from its reserve funds for the event.
- Fort McMurray's Catholic and public school divisions said they are reviewing a recent order from Alberta's Education Minister to provide in-person learning for all students, as over 1,000 educational assistants continue their strike. The order comes after a court injunction stopped the exemption that had kept students with complex needs at home during the strike. Both school divisions warned that they may not have enough capacity to bring all students back to school. The strike, which started in November 2024, has led to the cancellation of classes for students with special needs.
