On Tuesday, at 6:00 pm, there will be a Council Special Meeting. The main agenda item - a land matter - will be discussed in camera (in secret). At 7:00 pm, the meeting will open to the public and Council will discuss the creation of an Audit and Budget Committee.

In good news this week, the wildfires near Janvier, Chipewyan Prairie First Nation, Highway 881, and Conklin are mostly under control or contained. The Kettle River Complex, consisting of 12 wildfires southeast of Fort McMurray, is mostly not threatening communities or infrastructure.
- The Fort McMurray Knights Rugby Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary. On August 3rd, the Club held a day of rugby matches and a gala event. The celebration drew about 150 former players from across North America, reuniting many who hadn’t seen each other in decades. Despite challenges like fluctuating oil prices and the transient nature of the local workforce, the Knights have remained a staple in Fort McMurray’s sports scene.

All funds for the FireSmart Home Rebate Program have been claimed. Over 300 home assessments have been completed, and while the Municipality’s rebate funds are exhausted, some rebates are still available for rural areas outside Fort McMurray. Residents in the City can still receive a home assessment but will need to cover any improvement costs themselves.

Carter Yakemchuk, a native of Fort McMurray, has signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Ottawa Senators after being selected 7th overall in the NHL Draft. The 18-year-old defenceman, who recently completed his junior career with the Calgary Hitmen, will start with the Senators at their September camp. Yakemchuk, known for his offensive skills, scored 30 goals and 71 points last season. Congratulations Carter!
- The former Human Resources Director accused of secretly approving over $1 million in bonuses to senior staff at the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) has filed a $2.1 million counterclaim. She is arguing that her actions followed proper procedure and were approved by the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO). She also alleges that RMWB Councillor Keith McGrath and CUPE Local 1505 President Craig Milley made harmful public statements about her.
