This Week In Fort McMurray:

• The Wood Buffalo Development Advisory Committee will meet at 9:30 am on Wednesday to discuss the Downtown Revitalization Incentive Program, specifically an update on Phase 3 of the program. A Committee recruitment update and skills matrix are the other two items on the agenda.
  
  
• The Wood Buffalo Downtown Revitalization Advisory Committee will also meet on Wednesday, at 5:30 pm. The agenda includes a Lighting Improvement Project at the Main and MacDonald intersection, the kiyām Community Park Usage and Communication Plan, and an update on the flood mitigation project, among other items.
  
  
• Nominations for the Council Excellence Awards are open until October 14th. There are four award categories: Citizen of the Year, Everyday Hero, Indigenous Advocate, and the Youth Award. The Youth Award is open to residents aged 15 - 34 as of December 31st, 2023, while the other categories are open to nominees of all ages. To nominate an outstanding citizen, simply complete the nomination form online.

• Mayor Sandy Bowman has announced his candidacy for a second term in the next municipal election. Bowman expressed satisfaction with Council's achievements under his leadership, but emphasized his desire to tackle remaining projects. Key initiatives he hopes to advance include flood mitigation efforts, downtown development, and improving utility fees to match those in other Alberta cities. Bowman is also supportive of incentives to encourage transient workers to live in the community and aims to foster economic and cultural growth in the area. The municipal election is set for October 20th, 2025.
  
  
• The federal and provincial governments once again clashed over the future of the oil industry. Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson stated last week that “[O]il is probably peaking this year, and the economic plan of the Conservative Party of Canada is simply to produce more in oil and gas into a market that inevitably will begin to decline.” These remarks were strongly opposed by local MLA and Alberta's Minister of Energy and Minerals Brian Jean, who argued that Wilkinson is misinformed about the current and future state of the oil and gas industry. Jean criticized the federal government's economic policies as anti-energy and anti-development, asserting that demand for Alberta's oil continues to grow and that recent production reached record levels. He emphasized the moral obligation to meet global energy demand, warning that eliminating the oil and gas sector would lead to energy poverty in developing nations.
  
  
• Big Brothers Big Sisters Wood Buffalo celebrated success with their recent SMS Wine Auction, raising over $135,000 to support youth mentoring programs in the community. The event took place at the Grand Ballroom at Shell Place and featured wine and scotch tastings, dueling pianos, and an exclusive auction collection. Larry Gouthro, General Manager of title sponsor SMS Equipment, emphasized that the funds will empower local youth by providing vital mentorship and guidance. Plans are already underway for next year’s Wine Auction, set for September 20th, 2025, which will commemorate the event's 15th anniversary.
