• On Tuesday, at 5:00 pm, there will be a Council meeting. Council is being asked to schedule a meeting in Fort Chipewyan in 2026, following a Notice of Motion from Councillor Kendrick Cardinal at the March 10th, 2026, meeting. Administration is tasked with identifying a suitable date and reporting it back to Council on or before April 14th, 2026. The report includes background research to support scheduling a Council meeting in Fort Chipewyan, ensuring local representation and engagement with the community. The recommendation is for Administration to proceed with setting the date and providing an update to Council within the specified timeline.
  
  
• Council will receive an update on the Downtown Revitalization Incentives Program (DRIP). The municipal grant initiative is designed to encourage private investment and improve the downtown core through building and public-facing enhancements. Since its pilot phase in 2020, the program has evolved through three phases, expanding from quick façade projects to more comprehensive interior renovations, accessibility upgrades, and safety improvements. Phase 3, running from 2024-2026, emphasizes reusing vacant spaces and supporting larger-scale revitalization projects, with applications currently accepted until May 31st, 2026. Of 72 applications received, 45 were approved, with 34 projects in progress, 11 completed, and 2 under conditional approval. Interior and façade improvements account for most grants, and approved projects are distributed across key downtown corridors to promote broad revitalization. Financially, Phase 3 has approximately $1.7 million still available from the $2.6 million carried forward, with reimbursements issued after verified project completion. Proposed amendments to the policy include extending the intake period until funds are exhausted, preventing duplicate funding from other municipal programs, and allowing Administration to cancel inactive applications after four weeks.
  
  
• Community leaders in Fort McMurray are launching a new literacy initiative, Read Across Wood Buffalo Day, to promote reading, storytelling, and civic engagement. The launch event will take place on March 27th from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm at Keyano College’s Clearwater Campus, featuring cultural performances, poetry readings, live music, and remarks from local leaders, including Deputy Mayor Mike Allen. The initiative is led by Juleus Ghunta, the Writers’ Guild of Alberta’s 2025 Regional Writer-in-Residence for Fort McMurray, with support from the Writers’ Guild, Arts Council Wood Buffalo, and the Northern Canada Collective Society of Writers. This March event serves as a kickoff, with future outreach planned to schools, non-profits, and businesses in the region. The first official Read Across Wood Buffalo Day celebration is scheduled for September 25th during Alberta Culture Days. 
  
  
• Fort McMurray and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo are gaining recognition as a family-friendly tourism destination, highlighted in a recent feature by Alberta Mamas. The article showcases numerous attractions, including the Oil Sands Discovery Centre, Heritage Village, and the Giants of Mining outdoor exhibit, along with interactive learning experiences tied to the region’s industrial and cultural history. Recreation hubs such as MacDonald Island Park and Vista Ridge All Seasons Park offer indoor and outdoor activities year-round, including water parks, playgrounds, trails, and fitness facilities. Outdoor experiences are emphasized, with access to extensive trail systems, forests, and nearby Gregoire Lake for paddling, camping, and beach activities. The area also provides more than 60 playgrounds, splash parks, and recreational programming, along with indoor entertainment like bowling, laser tag, and family-friendly cafés. This coverage reflects Fort McMurray’s growing profile in tourism, reinforcing efforts to position the region as a year-round destination for families. 
  
  
• The Fort McMurray Public School Division is launching a new program called the Wood Buffalo Athletics Academy for the 2026-27 school year, aimed at supporting student-athletes in Grades 4 through 8. The academy will combine high-level athletic training with classroom instruction, helping students balance competitive sports with their education. An open house will be held today at 7:00 pm at MacDonald Island Park, allowing families to learn about the program, meet school leadership, and ask questions about curriculum and expectations. Superintendent Annalee Nutter says that the Academy is designed to foster both academic and athletic development while building skills such as discipline and resilience. Families interested in enrolling students for the first year must submit applications by April 10th.
