• On Tuesday, at 5:00 pm, there will be a Special Meeting of Council. The agenda revolves around the Horse River Wildfire 10-Year Anniversary Commemoration. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is planning a series of gatherings to mark the 10-year anniversary of the Horse River Wildfire on May 3rd, 2026. The events will include a family-friendly drop-in in Fort McMurray, with brief remarks from officials and community members, quiet reflection areas, displays of artwork and recovery information, and access to mental health supports. Rural gatherings will follow throughout May and early June in communities including Anzac, Conklin, Janvier, Fort Chipewyan, Fort McKay, and Saprae Creek Estates, offering similar supports and light refreshments. The events aim to recognize first responders and volunteers, highlight community recovery, and provide educational resources, all within the approved $100,000 budget.
  
  
• The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has secured federal funding of $367,296 to support local homelessness prevention programs through the Salvation Army. The funding, provided via the Homelessness Reduction Innovation Fund, will fund two temporary positions - a homelessness prevention co-ordinator and a rent bank program specialist - running from April 2026 to March 2027. The program aims to identify individuals at risk of losing housing and provide short-term financial support to prevent homelessness. This marks the second round of federal support for the region, helping maintain continuity of services and strengthen local capacity to address housing challenges as part of Canada’s broader Reaching Home strategy.
  
  
• The Wood Buffalo RCMP have launched a new Financial Crime Unit to tackle the rise of fraud and cyber-enabled offences in the region. Operating within the detachment’s general investigation section, the unit will focus on identifying offenders, disrupting fraudulent activity, and increasing charges in cases targeting residents and businesses. Police note that financial crimes have become more sophisticated, often crossing jurisdictions and borders, and are increasingly impacting northern Alberta communities. Residents are urged to report suspected fraud to the RCMP or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, gather relevant documentation, and alert their financial institutions to help prevent further incidents.
  
  
• The Fort Chipewyan Winter Road will close for the season on April 7th due to spring thaw making travel unsafe. Weight limits have started to be gradually reduced, with only light vehicles allowed overnight from April 4th to 6th, and daytime travel prohibited. The road will fully close at 10:00 am on April 7th, after remaining open for 108 days this season, exceeding the 10-year average. Similar restrictions apply to the La Loche Winter Trail. Officials stress that the measures protect the road and ensure safety, advising drivers to follow signage, expect rough conditions, and note that travel on closed roads is prohibited. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo will also implement seasonal weight restrictions on several gravel roads starting April 7th due to spring thaw affecting road stability. Vehicle weights will be limited to 75% of gross vehicle weight, with additional axle weight reductions possible depending on conditions. Affected routes include West Road in Conklin, Stoney Mountain Crossover and Road, Tower Road in Fort McMurray, Aostra Road west of Suncor, and True North Road. Officials advise motorists to follow signage and adjust driving to protect roads and ensure safety until the gravel surfaces are fully thawed and dried.
