• The Wood Buffalo Development Advisory Committee meets on Wednesday at 9:30 am. On the agenda is the 2025 Census Update. The results show a return to population growth and a community that is becoming more stable and established over time. The total population has increased compared to 2021, driven largely by growth in the urban service area, while the number of people living in temporary project accommodations has continued to decline, suggesting stronger workforce localization. The region remains relatively young and working-age, with more residents choosing to stay longer, as nearly 80% lived in the municipality prior to 2021 and only a small share are new arrivals. Housing is led by single-detached homes, though a mix of housing types supports a range of residents, and average household sizes remain moderate. The data also shows a community with strong lifestyle elements, including high pet ownership and diverse demographics. 
  
  
• Also on Wednesday, at 5:30 pm, there will be a meeting of the Wood Buffalo Downtown Revitalization Advisory Committee. On the agenda is the Committee’s 2022-2026 plan. It outlines a strategy to strengthen the downtown core through four main priorities: beautification, placemaking, neighbourhood safety, and pedestrian friendliness. In the short term, actions focus on improving maintenance standards, enforcing snow removal and graffiti cleanup, enhancing public spaces, and advancing a cohesive visual identity aligned with regional branding. The plan also emphasizes better connections between downtown and the waterfront, including wayfinding signage, lighting upgrades, crosswalk improvements, and accessible design, alongside increased community policing and safety-focused initiatives. Partnerships with businesses, community groups, and other levels of government are highlighted as key to revitalization, along with efforts to encourage public space use and support local economic activity. Medium-term actions include developing a downtown parking plan, improving vacant land maintenance, and integrating safety and active transportation into broader planning efforts. Long-term goals centre on fully implementing redevelopment plans and exploring future strategies to encourage growth and investment. 
  
  
• A decade after the massive 2016 Horse River wildfire, Fort McMurray is often described as a community shaped but not defined by disaster. The blaze grew rapidly into one of Alberta’s largest recorded wildfires, forcing around 90,000 people to evacuate and ultimately destroying thousands of homes and structures. In the years since, rebuilding has been extensive, with the majority of damaged buildings restored and the region’s population even surpassing pre-fire levels. Officials and emergency responders credit the coordinated response at the time for saving most of the city, while also acknowledging how the experience permanently changed wildfire preparedness in the region. Programs focused on mitigation and “FireSmart” practices have become part of everyday life as the community adapts to living in a fire-prone boreal environment. Alongside physical rebuilding, residents and support workers recall the emotional toll of the disaster, as well as moments of solidarity that helped people begin recovering. 
  
  
• Council is set to review a series of rural-focused proposals brought forward for consideration at an upcoming meeting in Anzac on May 19th. One motion explores the potential development of a dirt bike track in Anzac, with Council asked to examine feasibility, safety requirements, environmental impacts, and costs, reflecting local interest in motorized recreation. Another proposal suggests creating a shared outdoor gathering space in Gregoire Lake Estates, including basic amenities like picnic tables and fire pits to support community interaction where no formal space currently exists. A separate motion would have Administration look into building Transport Canada-compliant helipads in rural communities as part of the 2027 budget, with the goal of improving emergency response and air ambulance access. Councillor proposals also include developing a formal rural snow and ice control policy to clarify service levels outside urban areas. 
  
  
• The Alberta government is reviewing the response to a major spring snowstorm that left hundreds of vehicles stranded on Highway 63 south of Fort McMurray last week. Heavy snowfall and strong winds caused severe drifting and eventually shut down the route between Wandering River and Mariana Lake, leaving up to 400 vehicles immobilized overnight. Emergency services and local authorities eventually deployed plows, supplies, and a bus, and the highway was fully reopened by early Saturday. No serious injuries were reported, although responders did face challenges reaching at least one person with a medical emergency. Transportation officials say the review will assess communication, coordination, and response times, as well as the actions of the highway maintenance contractor. While the Province argues the storm’s severity was the main factor, some have raised concerns about whether warnings and response efforts were sufficient.
