Fort McMurray Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Fort McMurray politics

📅 This Week In Fort McMurray: 📅

  • Council will hold a Special Meeting on Tuesday at 5:00 pm at the Anzac Recreation Centre. Included on the agenda is the second and third readings of an amendment to the Rural Water and Wastewater Service Connection grant program, extending the eligibility period from 5 years to 7 years. The change was directed by Council following the passage of the original program bylaw on April 14th, 2026, and is being brought forward urgently - the program period for residents in Janvier and Saprae Creek Estates expires at the end of June 2026. The staff report flags several fiscal implications: extending the program by two years means higher municipal costs in 2027 and 2028 for Saprae Creek Estates and Janvier, and in 2029 and 2030 for Anzac, Conklin, and Gregoire Lake Estates. Capital funds will be required until the end of the 2035 Capital Budget year. Infrastructure in portions of Conklin has not yet been constructed, and the extension may also result in additional operational costs for maintaining under-subscribed infrastructure.

  • Also on Tuesday's agenda is a motion from Councillor Kyle Vandecasteyen directing Administration to develop a formal ice and snow control policy for rural communities in the region. The Municipality currently maintains a formal policy with defined service standards for urban snow and ice control; no equivalent exists for rural areas, meaning service levels, priorities, and expectations are not clearly defined for communities including Anzac, Conklin, Janvier, Gregoire Lake Estates, and Saprae Creek Estates. Administration would be directed to benchmark against comparable municipalities, engage rural residents, and report back to Council with policy options, service level considerations, and cost implications on or before October 13th, 2026.

  • The Homelessness Initiatives Strategic Committee will meet on Wednesday at 2:00 pm. On the agenda is the latest homelessness data for Wood Buffalo, which shows 216 individuals on the by-name list in April 2026 - the by-name list tracks anyone who has experienced homelessness, even for a single day. That figure is down from a high of 239 in January. Thirty-one new individuals were added to the list in April, while 226 were actively working with a housing program and 21 moved into housing during the month, the highest monthly figure in the five months tracked in the report. The Committee will also receive an update on the municipality's Community Safety and Social Well-Being Strategy, which is scheduled to come before Council on June 9th, 2026.

  • Alberta Wildfire lifted a fire advisory for the Fort McMurray Forest Area on Thursday, citing "improved weather conditions" following recent rainfall and cooler temperatures. Despite the improvement, wildfire danger remains high throughout the region. Four wildfires have already been recorded in the Fort McMurray Forest Area since the start of the year, and conditions north of Lake Athabasca are described as moderate. Fire permits are required for any open burning between March 1st and October 31st. Fireworks and exploding targets remain prohibited in the forest area without written approval from a forest officer, and residents are advised to fully extinguish any campfire before leaving the area.

  • The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has posted notice of a public hearing on a proposed land use bylaw amendment that would add "Drive Through" as a discretionary use in the Medium Industrial District. Currently, minor restaurant uses are permitted in that zone, but drive-through operations are not - the proposed amendment would address that gap. The bylaw is scheduled for first reading on May 26th, with the public hearing to follow on June 9th at 5:00 pm at the Jubilee Centre Council Chamber. Residents wishing to speak at the hearing must register with Legislative Services by noon on June 1st. Written submissions are also accepted until that deadline.
