On Wednesday, at 9:30 am, the Wood Buffalo Development Advisory Committee will meet. The Committee will receive a presentation on the Community Standards Bylaw from the Bylaw Services Manager. The presentation will address issues such as nuisances on properties, unsightly vegetation, garbage, derelict vehicles, graffiti, and the proper handling of shopping carts. Infractions such as littering, failure to remove graffiti, and snow-clearing violations carry fines ranging from $120 to $500. The presentation will also highlight how infractions are reported, with Pulse Line and self-generated reports being the most common sources. Enforcement of the bylaw is grounded in the Municipal Government Act, which allows municipalities to issue orders to remedy violations and enter properties for inspections. The enforcement process includes investigation, issuance of notices, an appeal period, and the potential for property clean-up, with costs applied to the property owner's tax roll if necessary.

There are three other Committee meetings taking place this week - the Wood Buffalo Downtown Revitalization Advisory Committee on Wednesday at 5:30 pm, the Advisory Committee on Aging on Thursday at 1:00 pm, and the Wood Buffalo Waterfront Advisory Committee on Thursday at 6:00 pm. An item labelled “Proposed Mobile Vendor Bylaw” appears on several of the agendas, however there are no attachments or further information available to assess the bylaw. We’ll be watching the meetings and will keep you updated!

Fire danger is high across the Fort McMurray region as warm, dry spring weather continues. Two small wildfires are burning near the Birch Mountains, both under control or being held. Meanwhile, southern parts of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo have seen more activity, with 25 wildfires reported so far this year. Alberta Wildfire is warning that conditions will remain volatile until the seasonal green-up arrives, and is urging caution outdoors.

In Fort McMurray-Cold Lake, incumbent Conservative MP Laila Goodridge secured re-election with over 80% of the vote. She emphasized her commitment to supporting the energy industry and representing local concerns. Liberal candidate Kaitlyn Staines finished second with 14.3% of the vote, while the PPC's Alan Clarke saw a significant decline in support. Goodridge highlighted her extensive door-knocking campaign, noting she reached out to communities often overlooked during elections. Voter turnout in the riding was over 48,000 people, about 60.75% of registered electors. Despite the Liberals' national victory under Mark Carney, Alberta remained a Conservative stronghold.
- Keyano College is facing a $14 million deficit for the 2025-26 academic year, primarily due to a 91% drop in international student enrollment caused by recent federal immigration policy changes. To address this financial shortfall, the college is cutting 70 to 90 jobs, with some positions being merged or reorganized. Several program intakes, including esports, business management and paramedic programs, have been paused as part of a broader review of course offerings.
