📅 This Week In Fort McMurray: 📅
-
On Tuesday, at 4:00 pm, there will be a Special Meeting of Council. The Municipality is considering transferring a municipal lot, Lot 10A in Fort McKay, to the Fort McKay First Nation (FMFN) for an Addition to Reserve (ATR) proposal. This transfer, along with three other lots totalling about 112 acres, would expand the FMFN Reserve No. 174 and support residential and community development. Lot 10A currently hosts an air monitoring station and partially overlaps with FMFN homes, so the transfer would resolve encroachment issues. FMFN has also agreed to provide access easements for municipal monitoring wells near a non-operational landfill. The lot is considered surplus by the Municipality, and the financial impact is considered minimal, with a small loss in municipal tax revenue but no immediate effect on services.

Also at the Special Meeting, Council will discuss cancelling the $1 million capital budget allocation for extending the municipal potable water network to the Fort McMurray Golf Club (FMGC) and instead providing the same amount as a funding agreement directly to FMGC. This would allow the golf club to manage the planning, design, and construction of a potable water service line on its own land. The municipal extension would have involved extra costs for FMGC, regulatory delays, seasonal usage limits, and additional infrastructure requirements, which the service line approach avoids. While the Municipality typically does not fund service lines, this approach would better support the golf club as a community recreational asset. It would enable year-round water service to FMGC without municipal ownership of the infrastructure.

Also on Tuesday, at 6:00 pm, there will be a regular meeting of Council. Councillor Dogar will bring forward a Notice of Motion requesting that Legal Aid be provided to support an appeal against recommendations made by the Integrity Commissioner. Recall that Councillor Dogar was briefly kicked out of a March 25th Council meeting after refusing to follow multiple points of order while trying to have the Integrity Commissioner fired. Council ultimately rejected his motion, with only Dogar voting in favour. Dogar has been reprimanded more than any other councillor this term.
-
Councillor Bussieres will bring forward a Notice of Motion too, proposing an amendment to the Community Standards Bylaw. The proposed change would require commercial property owners to remove snow stockpiles, debris, and similar materials by April 1st each year. This initiative aims to improve property maintenance and community appearance following the winter season. The proposed amendment would only apply to commercial properties, not residential ones. Another Notice of Motion will be brought forward by Councillor Banjoki to revisit a previous Council decision regarding the creation of an Audit and Budget Committee. This motion was originally brought forward on September 10th, 2024, but is now up for reconsideration. The proposed committee would focus on financial oversight and budgeting matters.
- The Municipality has officially opened its new $50.7-million Public Works North Operations Centre in Fort McMurray. Located on Silin Forest Road, the facility features a 25,000-square-foot administrative building, 20 garage bays, three wash bays, and a 38,000-square-foot heated storage space for vehicles. Mayor Sandy Bowman praised the project as a step toward more efficient municipal services. Public Works Director Keith Smith said the new centre replaces an aging satellite yard and will help lower equipment maintenance costs, reduce emissions, and extend the life of the fleet. With space for 80 to 90 pieces of equipment and on-site repair capabilities, the facility is expected to improve response times, especially during winter.
