Fort McMurray Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Fort McMurray politics

📅 This Week In Fort McMurray: 📅

  • City Council has decided not to dissolve the Wood Buffalo Economic Development Corp. after two audits found no fraud. Still, they revealed repeated failures to follow basic spending rules under previous leadership. The reports showed past staff mismanaged travel, food, and alcohol expenses, with missing paperwork and poor oversight. New Board Chair Terry Cooper admitted the findings were troubling but said many fixes are already in place. Councillors heard concerns that scrapping the group would stall economic efforts and cost the region opportunities to attract investment. While some argued that money should go to urgent needs like housing instead, most Councillors agreed that the new leadership deserves a chance to restore accountability and deliver results. Only two Councillors voted to dissolve the agency, which has received more than $23 million in funding since 2019.

  • Fort McMurray has officially banned e-scooters from sidewalks, trails, pathways, and other public spaces not designed for vehicles, with violations carrying a $500 fine and possible impoundment. Complaints about reckless e-scooter use have increased, with bylaw officers issuing over 2,200 fines and responding to nearly 1,400 incidents so far this year. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s existing bylaws, last updated in 2002, lacked clear rules on e-scooter use, complicating enforcement and public education. While Mayor Sandy Bowman supported the ban, some Councillors opposed it, citing concerns about vague rules and the high fine amount. Exemptions can be made if the Municipality wants to allow commercial e-scooter operations.

  • Ken Ball has resigned from his position as Ward 1 Councillor, citing exhaustion from his late wife’s two-year battle with cancer. Ball decided not to seek re-election and felt it was the right time to step away to focus on his personal well-being. Having served one term on Council, Ball brought extensive municipal experience from a 27-year career in planning, engineering, and parks departments. Mayor Sandy Bowman praised Ball for his professionalism and dedication, wishing him well in his future endeavours. The last Council meeting is scheduled for September 9th, with the municipal election planned for October 20th.

  • Council has approved plans to redevelop a stretch of waterfront between Hardin Street and Borealis Park, with a projected cost of $4 million. The underused patch of land, currently serving as overflow parking for big events, will see new trails, spaces for food trucks, picnic areas, community BBQs, garden beds, and an art feature. The project, pitched by the Wood Buffalo Waterfront Advisory Committee, aims to transform the dirt lot into a family-friendly space for gatherings, small performances and outdoor activities. Concerns about parking during large events like cultural festivals will be addressed through further study. The revamped space is intended to better connect residents and visitors to the waterfront while improving Fort McMurray’s downtown appeal.

  • This summer, over 2,000 bear-resistant garbage bins will be delivered to homes on selected streets in Fort McMurray, chosen based on high bear activity data from Alberta Fish and Wildlife. These bins are designed to prevent bears and other wildlife from accessing garbage, reducing dangerous encounters and enhancing neighbourhood safety. Distribution has begun with Burton Place, and residents will receive a notification letter one week before their scheduled delivery. The program, which began as a successful pilot in 2023, has expanded each year due to positive feedback, with more bins proposed for delivery in 2026 pending Council approval. Beyond the bins, residents are advised to manage other attractants like pet food and bird feeders.
