A new park in Fort McMurray has opened to honour the resilience of the community following the 2016 wildfire. Located in Beacon Hill, Reflections Lookout and the adjacent Emily Ryan Playground commemorate those who were lost, including 15-year-old Emily Ryan and 19-year-old Aaron Hodgson, who died in a crash during the mass evacuation. Emily’s father, Cranley Ryan, then a Deputy Fire Chief, described the space as sacred and thanked the community for helping his family through the grief. The park includes a trail with reflections from first responders and residents, leading to a scenic lookout over the city. Municipal leaders emphasized the space as both a place of remembrance and a symbol of hope and healing. Acting Fire Chief Rob van Hecke called it a space that belongs to everyone and supports moving forward together. Mayor Sandy Bowman said the park also honours all those impacted by the disaster, which remains one of the most significant events in Fort McMurray’s history.

A report from former Integrity Commissioner Kenneth Warren found that Councillor Shafiq Dogar interfered with municipal operations during the 2024 wildfire evacuations. Dogar allegedly entered restricted areas without authorization, disrupted staff efforts, and verbally abused Chief Administrative Officer Henry Hunter. He also accused Hunter of racism and incompetence in emails to other Council members. The report described Dogar as a repeat offender and noted that this was his fourth reprimand. Although Council sanctioned Dogar in January 2025, those penalties no longer apply due to provincial legislation removing municipal codes of conduct. Dogar denies the report’s findings and claims he was unfairly targeted.

Auto thefts in Fort McMurray appear to be declining after peaking in 2023, even as total insurance claims for stolen vehicles remain elevated. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), theft-related claims in the region rose 53% between 2021 and 2024, reaching $3.5 million at their peak before dropping slightly to $3.1 million last year. Police-reported thefts followed a similar trend, with 451 vehicles stolen in 2023 and 355 in 2024. So far this year, 118 thefts have been reported in the city and 33 in nearby rural areas. The Wood Buffalo RCMP say targeted enforcement efforts and public education campaigns, such as Operation Cold Start, have contributed to the decrease. However, province-wide auto theft costs have soared 161% since 2014. IBC is calling for regulatory reforms to help curb fraud and improve insurance enforcement, warning that Alberta’s rate cap may be contributing to reduced insurance availability.

Fort McMurray and Cold Lake saw continued labour force growth in June, with Statistics Canada reporting a 1,300-person increase compared to May. The region’s employment rate rose to 70.3%, while the participation rate climbed to 75.2%. Full-time jobs increased by 1,300, though part-time positions dipped slightly. Unemployment edged up to 6.4% as more people entered the job market than found work. Public and private sector jobs both posted gains, but self-employment declined by 300. Sectoral shifts showed strong growth in sales and service, retail, and public administration, while oil and gas, construction, and food services experienced modest declines. Alberta as a whole added 30,000 jobs in June and saw a drop in unemployment to 6.8%.
