At a mayoral forum hosted by the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce, incumbent Mayor Sandy Bowman and challenger Zulkifl Mujahid faced off in a largely respectful but sharply contrasting debate. Bowman emphasized his record from the past four years, citing completed promises, strong fiscal management, and major infrastructure projects such as Highway 686 and the expansion of Highway 63. Mujahid focused on themes of transparency and accountability, proposing a series of subsidies for seniors, businesses, and utility relief, though he faced repeated questions about funding. Bowman countered that Mujahid’s proposals would require tax increases and often corrected his understanding of municipal processes. The two also clashed over red tape, with Mujahid claiming small businesses face bureaucratic hurdles and Bowman insisting most processes are already streamlined. On crime, Bowman highlighted new prevention and policing initiatives, while Mujahid called for more support for homelessness programs. Bowman received the strongest applause when outlining plans for municipal apprenticeship programs to train local youth and reduce fly-in, fly-out workforces, reinforcing his message of experience and continuity.

Residents of Saprae Creek Estates, Draper, and nearby communities will have a chance to hear from municipal election candidates at a forum hosted by the Saprae Creek Residents Association on October 8th, 2025, at 6:30 pm at Vista Ridge. Moderated by Jenna Hamilton-Giles of the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce, the event will feature both Mayoral contenders and Ward 3 Council candidates. It follows the first mayoral debate on October 1st, which focused on business issues, with this discussion expected to emphasize rural services, infrastructure, and safety. Ward 3 incumbent Stu Wigle and challenger Sarah Hollands will again present their visions for the ward, after previously debating on September 17th at Landmark Cinemas.

Former Fort McMurray Councillor Sheldon Germain, who served 19 years on Council, says the unusually large number of candidates running in Wood Buffalo’s 2025 municipal and school board elections reflects both voter dissatisfaction and a desire for change. Germain noted that the crowded races, especially for school trustee positions, are influenced by recent labour unrest, including last year’s CUPE strike and the potential for a teacher strike. He said these issues have heightened public concern about education funding and accountability. Germain advised candidates to stay focused on simple, consistent messaging and to manage their campaigns efficiently, emphasizing the importance of door-knocking and visibility through lawn signs. He also reminded voters that while education is a provincial matter, municipal councils can still play a supportive role through partnerships and advocacy.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) announced that Council candidate profiles are now available on its official election website, marking the first time such information has been featured online. The new “Who’s Running” webpage includes one-minute videos recorded in the RMWB studio, along with 150-word written statements and photos voluntarily submitted by candidates. Not all candidates chose to participate, and the submission deadline has now passed. The initiative was developed in response to feedback from the 2024 Municipal Voter Experience engagement, which showed residents wanted easier access to information about their election choices. School trustee candidates continue to be listed separately on the official List of Candidates page.
- The Municipality also launched a redesigned website aimed at improving accessibility, reliability, and ease of use for residents. The new site features a mobile-friendly layout, better navigation, and enhanced accessibility tools to help users find local information more efficiently. As part of the update, the Municipality has simplified its subscription process for news and alerts. Anyone who subscribed before September 11th, 2025, must resubscribe to continue receiving updates. Residents can now choose from categories such as municipal news, emergency alerts, construction notices, winter road updates, and public notices.
