The Municipality is encouraging residents to participate in its Community Backyard Rink program ahead of the winter season. The program gives residents permission to build temporary ice rinks on municipal land, promoting outdoor recreation and community engagement. Approved rinks are covered under the municipality’s insurance policy, ensuring safety and compliance, while unauthorized ones could be fined or removed. Residents can find step-by-step information and apply online through the municipality’s E-Permitting portal. All rinks must be completed by December 31st.

While schools in the Fort McMurray Public and Catholic divisions remain closed due to the ongoing teachers’ strike, the Municipality has suspended school zone speed limits. Normally, the 30 km/h limit applies on school days from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, but municipal bylaw officers are not enforcing it during the work stoppage. Officials say the reduced limits will return once classes resume. Despite the temporary suspension, the municipality is urging drivers to stay cautious, as some schools are still hosting daycare and after-school programs. Playground zones, however, remain active year-round with a 30 km/h limit.

Support Services Wood Buffalo will permanently close on December 31st, 2025, ending over 20 years of support for vulnerable residents in the region. Established in 2002 as the Supportive Transitional Housing Team, the agency helped hundreds of adults with life skills, housing stability, income support, and access to mental health and legal services. Its programs included one-on-one planning, advocacy, free tax clinics, and partnerships with local detox centers, drug treatment courts, and senior initiatives. Executive Director Nicole Stagg cited ongoing funding pressures and sustainability challenges as the reason for closure, emphasizing a focus on a smooth transition for clients. The agency’s services extended beyond direct casework, offering workshops on budgeting, emergency preparedness, goal setting, and self-care. Despite its recognized contributions, including a Minister’s Award of Merit, its unique model fell outside traditional funding streams, complicating long-term operations. Staff are coordinating transfers to other providers to minimize disruption.

Nominations are now open for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s Council’s Excellence Awards, which honour residents and groups making meaningful contributions to the community. The awards celebrate leadership, compassion, and commitment across four categories: Citizen of the Year, Everyday Hero, Indigenous Advocate, and Youth, recognizing achievements that improve life in the region or positively impact Indigenous communities. An advisory panel will review submissions and provide recommendations to the Mayor and Council, who will select the winners. Recipients and their nominators will be recognized at a ceremony in the new year. Nomination forms and guidelines are available on the Municipality’s website.
- The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is encouraging parents to bring children with them to voting stations during advance and election-day polling, highlighting that kids under 18 can even accompany parents inside the voting booth. This initiative aims to ease challenges for families amid the ongoing provincial teachers’ strike and provide an opportunity for children to observe democracy in action. Election day is scheduled for October 20th, but final results may take several days due to new provincial rules requiring ballots to be counted by hand.
