The proposed River’s Edge Event Centre in Draper, south of Fort McMurray, faces a major setback after RMWB Council deadlocked 5-5 on whether to continue the rezoning process, meaning proponents must reapply after January 1st. The project has faced strong opposition from Draper residents concerned about increased traffic, noise, flooding, and loss of the community’s rural character. Supporters argue the 117-acre site is distant from most homes and could boost tourism and outdoor recreation. Council also noted that the proposed rezoning conflicts with the municipal development plan, which prioritizes low-density rural residential character and environmental protection. Legal advice and Councillor absences from the original public hearing complicated the vote, leading some to abstain.

Energy Minister Brian Jean hailed the new federal-provincial energy agreement as the most significant economic breakthrough for Alberta in decades. Signed by Prime Minister Mark Carney and Premier Danielle Smith, the deal supports a new West Coast bitumen pipeline with Indigenous co-ownership, lifts clean electricity regulations for Alberta, and removes the planned oil and gas emissions cap. In return, Alberta will raise its industrial carbon price and collaborate on major emissions reduction projects, including the Pathways carbon capture network. Jean highlighted the agreement’s potential to increase oil production toward 4.6 million barrels per day, generate billions in annual revenue, and provide Indigenous communities with economic and employment opportunities. He also noted benefits for coastal communities through jobs in welding, pipefitting, and technical work tied to the pipeline. Jean emphasized that the agreement will help northern Alberta recover from a difficult decade of economic and environmental challenges, providing investment, flexibility, and stability for the region.

Arts Council Wood Buffalo is now accepting applications for its 2026 Artist in Residence and Suncor Indigenous Artist in Residence programs. These residencies offer professional artists three to four weeks to focus on creating new work while engaging with the local community. Resident artists will develop a new body of work for a public showcase and lead up to two community workshops. The programs aim to bring fresh creative voices to the area and strengthen the local arts community through mentorship and collaboration. Applicants from across Canada are welcome, with a preference for those who take a community-centered approach. Local artists are especially encouraged to apply. Applications are open on the ACWB website until January 19th at 11:59 pm.
- The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is now accepting nominations for its annual Nominate Your Neighbour holiday light program. Residents can submit their favourite decorated homes or businesses by December 15th online, including the property address and a photo of the display. Nominees will receive a recognition lawn sign and certificate from the Wood Buffalo Communities in Bloom Committee, and some displays may be featured on the Municipality’s social media. The program encourages community pride and beautification as part of the local Communities in Bloom initiatives.
