The Community Investment Program Approval Committee (CIPAC) approved nearly $7.5 million in grants to support local non-profit organizations, community programs, and individual athletes or groups in Wood Buffalo. The grants cover three streams: Community Capital ($56,100), Community Impact ($2 million), and Community Sustaining ($5.4 million), with unallocated funds of $3.5 million moved to the Community Initiatives Reserve for 2027 allocations. A total of 44 grant applications were approved, and the Games Legacy Grant awarded $6,850 to seven successful applicants. CIPAC, established by Council in 2023, is a nine-member public committee responsible for reviewing applications and ensuring funding aligns with community needs and strategic priorities. The 2026 grant approvals were included in the interim municipal budget to prevent temporary funding gaps and provide consistent support to local organizations and athletes.

A mobile pantry program operated by the Wood Buffalo Food Bank is helping address food insecurity in some of Alberta’s most remote communities, where limited transportation and a lack of full-service grocery stores drive higher food costs. The program delivers monthly food hampers and vouchers to six communities across the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, reaching approximately 1,900 households annually. Some deliveries travel more than 200 kilometres by air to reach Fort Chipewyan, which is accessible only by plane or boat for much of the year. Non-perishable food is flown in, while vouchers allow recipients to purchase fresh food locally. Food Banks Alberta notes that rural and remote residents face both rising food prices and added transportation costs, making access a persistent challenge. Program organizers and local partners report that the initiative reduces financial stress for families and supports vulnerable residents. Food Banks Alberta says the model may be expanded to improve access in other remote regions of the province.

The Salvation Army’s annual Christmas kettle campaign in Fort McMurray is significantly behind its fundraising target, highlighting growing economic strain in the community. As of mid-December, the campaign has raised about $36,000 toward a $96,000 goal, a larger shortfall than in recent years, which previously fell only slightly below targets. Rising living costs, higher housing and food prices, and economic uncertainty are said to be limiting residents’ ability to donate, even as goodwill remains strong. Funds from the campaign support Christmas hampers and toys, as well as year-round assistance such as help with rent, utilities, emergency groceries, and outreach for people experiencing homelessness. At the same time, demand for these services is increasing, with more working families, seniors, and first-time clients seeking help.
- During a provincewide enforcement blitz for National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day, Alberta RCMP removed 50 impaired drivers from roads, though none were from the Wood Buffalo region. Checkstops across the province resulted in 28 Immediate Roadside Sanction fails, 13 warnings, six zero tolerance sanctions for novice or commercial drivers, and 328 tickets for offenses including distracted driving and speeding. In Fort McMurray, Wood Buffalo RCMP screened over 300 motorists, issuing 19 tickets and 13 warnings, but found no impaired drivers. Twelve injury collisions occurred provincewide during the enforcement period, with no fatalities reported. Enhanced holiday checkstops will continue throughout December to reinforce road safety.
