On Tuesday, at 4:00 pm, there will be a Council meeting. The meeting will take place entirely in closed session, away from the public eye. The agenda is lengthy, but there is no indication as to what is being discussed.
-
On Wednesday, at 1:00 pm, there will be a meeting of the Homelessness Initiatives Strategic Committee. The Committee will appoint a Chair and Vice-Chair, and then set 2026 meeting dates. Then, they will receive three agency presentations, from the Centre of Hope, the Salvation Army, and the Wood Buffalo Wellness Society, before a Homelessness Update from the Municipality. The update reports rising numbers of individuals experiencing homelessness in late 2025, with the By-Name List showing 224 in November and 221 in December, up from 138 in August. Enrollment in housing programs also grew steadily, with 214 people in programs by the end of the year.
-
Also on Wednesday, at 5:30 pm, the Regional Advisory Committee on Inclusion, Diversity and Equity will meet. This Committee will also appoint a Chair and Vice-Chair, and then set 2026 meeting dates. On the agenda is a study on racism and Islamophobia in Wood Buffalo, showing that 80 - 85% of public-facing posts involving Muslim visibility receive hate commentary. The study emphasizes that community organizations like the We Care Unit are bearing the majority of support responsibilities without formal municipal backing, creating an unsustainable model. The study calls for structured, preventative municipal action, centralized tracking of incidents, integration of mental health supports, and strategies that prioritize the safety and inclusion of women and families.

Fort McMurray enters 2026 poised for economic and population growth, with potential announcements expected for data centres, pipelines, and carbon capture projects, according to Mayor Sandy Bowman and Energy Minister Brian Jean. They highlighted ongoing discussions with investors and landowners, noting the region’s reliable energy, skilled workforce, and ample land make it ideal for data centres and AI-related facilities. The area saw strong local investment in 2025, including retail construction, municipal projects, and highway upgrades, with signs of population growth already visible. Premier Danielle Smith emphasized the importance of natural gas–powered data centres due to electricity reliability, while Jean highlighted progress on carbon capture and potential West Coast pipeline projects.
- The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo continues snow removal operations across the region, keeping all available crews and equipment active. Progress is being slowed by vehicles left on streets during active parking restriction hours, leading to additional enforcement and $120 fines plus towing for violators. High-traffic roads outside the Winter Maintenance Zones are also being plowed, with about 61% cleared so far, while crews have completed 172 of 219 streets in subzones 1 and 2. The Municipality is sharing daily winter maintenance updates online and encourages residents to submit service requests through Pulse for faster response.
