About 30 people attended a Government of Alberta panel in Fort McMurray to discuss the possibility of introducing nuclear energy in the province. Many participants expressed cautious optimism, raising questions about safety, water use, and long-term waste storage, with some emphasizing that nuclear power could be a clean and reliable energy source. Residents highlighted the need for better public education to address misinformation and stigma, suggesting nuclear topics be more thoroughly covered in schools. Panel attendees also noted potential benefits like job creation, training opportunities, and meeting future energy demands linked to technology growth. Several speakers pointed out that nuclear energy has been safely used for decades in Ontario and New Brunswick under strict federal oversight. Concerns included ensuring medical staff are prepared for health issues related to nuclear material and establishing clear regulations in Alberta. The panel will continue consultations in Bonnyville, Edmonton, and Calgary.

Vardy suggested several engagement options, including drop-in chats at local coffee shops, attending family-friendly events like Bikes and Trikes, hosting a meet-and-greet at Jubilee Plaza, and holding virtual sessions. She invited residents to share their preferences via comment, message, or email, clarifying that this outreach is separate from formal municipal consultations.
