The agenda includes a Land Use Bylaw Update, an amendment to the Sign Bylaw, an Annual Reporting Discussion, a Working Groups Update, and a discussion about Committee members as potential candidates in the 2025 Municipal Election.
  
  
• Also on Wednesday, at 5:30 pm, the Wood Buffalo Downtown Revitalization Advisory Committee will meet. The Committee will appoint a Chair and Vice-Chair, discuss its 2025 meeting schedule, and have a Committee Administration Orientation.

• Despite concerns about tariffs and trade disruptions, Fort McMurray Mayor Sandy Bowman said he remains optimistic about the region's future. Speaking to the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce, Bowman emphasized the area's financial stability, with low property taxes, no debt, and abundant land for development. He highlighted the region's key role in Canada's economy, particularly in the oilsands. Bowman also pointed to ongoing infrastructure projects, such as the Aging in Place facility and highway upgrades, which will help support the area's growth. However, he acknowledged challenges like labour shortages and youth migration, urging collaboration between businesses and governments to address these issues.
  
  
• At the annual Council Excellence Awards, four community members were recognized for their exceptional contributions to the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo region. Mohamed Tarrabin was named Citizen of the Year for his support of local businesses and non-profits, while Nadeem Aslam received the Everyday Hero Award for saving 25 lives after a lightning strike in June 2024. Stacie Atkinson was honored with the Indigenous Advocate Award for her work with Indigenous communities, and Lalithya Raavi received the Youth Citizen Award for her leadership in vision health and STEM initiatives. Mayor Sandy Bowman praised the winners and all nominees, highlighting the region's people as its greatest asset.
  
  
• Council has approved a memorial in Fort Chipewyan to honour Indigenous children who attended residential schools. The project will be developed in collaboration with Indigenous leaders and local communities to ensure a meaningful design and location. Dennis Fraser, the Municipality’s Indigenous and Rural Relations Director, emphasized the memorial's role in truth, justice, and reconciliation. Elder Lorraine Albert expressed the urgency of preserving this history before more elders pass away, stressing the memorial’s importance in educating future generations.
